This course examines American art within a national and international context. From the colonial through the modern period, American artists have expressed a cultural nationalism even as they identified with European art and history. Within this transatlantic culture, we will explore a wide range of artworks from colonial portraiture to abstract expressionism. Although the emphasis is upon American art in the Western tradition, we will look at the artistic influences from Asia, Latin America, and Africa as well as the art of the American Indian. By highlighting how American artists shaped a national identity and responded to international artistic currents, this course significantly expands the parameters of American art.

This course explores buildings in Chicago and its suburbs designed by the architects who have come to be called the Prairie School. The first sessions will focus on Frank Lloyd Wright's buildings and the work of individuals who trained in his Oak Park studio including Walter Burley Griffin, Marion Mahony, Barry Byrne, and John Van Bergen. The work of independent architects, including Myron Hunt, George W. Maher, Purcell & Elmslie, Schmidt, Garden & Martin, and Robert C. Spencer, Jr., will be studied in later classes. Buildings will be approached as total works of art, emphasizing the role of architects as well as collaborators including interior designers, furniture makers and landscape gardeners. The "prairie spirit" in landscape design will be explored, particularly in the work of Ossian C. Simonds, Wilhelm Miller, and Jens Jensen.
