The course focuses on the theories behind chemical interactions in nature and how they affect abundance and distribution of organisms. Examples of such interactions are chemical defence, chemical communication (how to find a mate and maintain social structure) and how to find food. It is also essential to understand how these interactions have evolved and the biosynthetic origin of the molecules mediating the interactions. Terrestrial as well as aquatic organisms and systems will be discussed. Lab work and exercises give insight into how active substances are isolated and identified and how their biological activity can be tested. Besides, different ways to use the knowledge to develop monitoring systems and to suppress harmful pests in an environmentally friendly manner are presented.

Almost all scientists use electric equipment, but due to the nature of research these machines don t always do exactly what we want them to do. After the course you will be able to fix these problems yourself, or at least know how to communicate your problems to an expert.

All activities based on scientific understanding require knowledge about analysing and handling information, data, and uncertainty. After successfully finishing this course you will be able to formulate hypotheses based on a scientific problem, design experiments to test the hypotheses, and analyse and interpret the experimental results. By focusing on practical applications rather than the underlying statistical theories we introduce basic statistical concepts and methods in a way that is easily understood. Due to the extensive use of computer simulations you will soon acquire the basic skills needed to plan, carry out, and evaluate scientific experiments.
