Northwestern - CIV_ENG 395-CN: Special Topics in Civil Engineering

There is a growing consensus that for environmental, economic or other reasons, the utilization of fossil fuels using conventional methods will have to be curtailed and new approaches will have to be developed in order to meet the energy needs of modern societies in the future. Renewable energy sources are often mentioned as the likely candidates to meet these needs cleanly, safely, and sustainably. This course reviews the resources, availability, potential uses and environmental effects of renewable energy sources in the United States. The sources evaluated include solar, wind (both on land and offshore), biomass, hydro, wave, ocean current, tidal, and geothermal energy. Issues and potential solutions related to storage, transmission, and distribution of energy from renewable sources are discussed.
