The mythic figure of Ariadne, princess of Crete, her legendary "ball of thread," and the cloth and clothing women produced are apt symbols for a study of feminine roles in antiquity. The continuity of the "golden thread" represents the intersection of time, historical eras, and personal histories, a nexus in which the work and spirit of women have been transmitted from one generation to another through the teaching and learning of the weaving or decorating of cloth and related crafts. This course looks both at original texts depicting lives of women in antiquity and the textiles they created, which render those lives immortal.
