This course introduces forms of media analysis informed by cultural studies, an approach that deals with the circulation of discourses and representations in popular media such as television, video games and the Internet. We will explore what cultural studies can tell us about media, particularly with regards to such issues as the construction of gender, race, class, sexuality and other facets of identity; popularity and the cultures of everyday life; cultural contestation over meanings, knowledge and norms; and cultural dimensions of globalisation.
