Literacy Through photography encourages children to explore their world as they photograph scenes from their own lives, and then use their images as catalysts for verbal and written expression. Framed around four thematic explorationsÂself-portrait, community, family and dreamsÂLTP provides children and teachers with the expressive and investigative tools of photography and writing for use in the classroom. Since 1989, the Center for Documentary Studies has worked with Durham Public Schools to involve teachers and students in this innovative approach to literacy and learning developed by artist and teacher Wendy Ewald.

EDUC 151S focuses on literacy and service learning, and the connection between the two. This course will explore recent research on the role service learning can play in promoting literacy development in children. We will examine the impact service learning, volunteering, and school-based tutoring programs have had on students in K-12 schools. We will also investigate the particular ways service learning tutoring programs have been used as alternative instructional approaches for children who are at-risk for school failure. A central question will be: can service learning contribute significantly to the literacy development of children? As a part of the course, students will engage in service learning mentoring experiences in the community, with an emphasis on helping at-risk children read for understanding. The course will also examine current issues in reading and literacy including such topics as: phonics versus whole language; cognitive approaches to developing reading comprehension; methods of teaching beginning reading; reading and learning disabilities; and the impact of cultural diversity on literacy. In their service learning experience, students will put into practice the concepts, theories, and teaching strategies discussed in class. This course requires a service experience outside of class time.

Each student will work in an early childhood program which involves children from infancy through five years of age. Settings vary and may provide care and education for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers, or the student may work in a specialized area such as the treatment of child abuse and neglect, offering therapeutic intervention and working with parents to help prevent future problems. Students earning the Children in Contemporary Society Certificate will work mainly in a policy-making setting. Students will integrate knowledge gained through courses in child development, clinical psychology, sociology, early childhood education and child policy, with direct experience with infants and young children from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds. They may work with children who are developing normally, and/or with those having developmental problems or disabilities, including emotional/behavioral difficulties. Opportunities to observe in several additional programs will be available as an introduction to the field of early childhood. Students will choose a focal child and get to know her/his family as well as the child.

This seminar serves as an introduction to the foundations of American civic engagement. We will begin the semester by focusing our attention on the Duke-Durham Neighborhood Partnership (http://community.duke.edu/). What is it? How did it evolve? How does it frame DukeÂs relationship with Durham? What social ideals does it embody? We will use the Neighborhood Partnership as a lens to help us understand the larger concept of civic engagement and theoretical foundations for terms like Âcommunity, Âneighbor, and Âhelp. Through the examination of and particiaption in the Durham community, students will have the opportunity to engage personally and directly with social issues and course material. In addition, we will explore case studies on community development as well as motives and barriers for civic engagement on the personal and social level.
