This course offers a thematic analysis of contemporary France with an emphasis on its representations in movies and literature. This course will focus more closely on the impact of the socio-economic crisis in the ways the French approach issues such as familial and intimate relationships, working conditions, social exclusion, immigration and métissage. This module will propose a wide range fo perspectives on contemporary France by giving an insight into different socio-cultural backgrounds from the provincial bourgeoisie to the Parisian "banlieues". It will recourse to sources as varied as narratives by Michel Houellebecq, Hervé Guibert, and François Bon, a play by Marie NDiaye, documentaries by Agnés Varda, and films by Laurent Cantet, Claude Chabrol, Christophe Honoré, and Abdellatif Kechiche.
