Water--the basis of life--is also a major source of disease and death in the world. Because fresh water is an increasingly precious and finite resource, it has become a source of ethical and political strife. While this strife is presently concentrated in Asia and the Middle East, water challenges are increasingly felt in the U.S. Although NU sits on one of the largest bodies of fresh water in the world, experts predict serious water shortages in Illinois in your lifetime. With so much at stake, where and how are the battles for water health, access and conservation fought? This class will explore the ways that battles over water are fought in the media, using TV, film, radio and the Internet. Guest speakers from government, water districts, foundations, corporations and advocacy groups will guide us in difficult and meaningful dialogues. As future leaders in your local communities, and global networks, you have the potential to make a lasting difference in solving water issues. The class will arm you with tools and discussions to tackle water issues now and in your future.

While Northwesterns campus sits on one of the largest bodies of fresh water in the world, experts predict that by 2050, Illinois and much of the U.S. will experience severe water shortages. It is timely to begin difficult dialogues about water management, not only where we live, but in relationship to our global partners. Through the power of media, well explore past and present-day problems and solutions regarding water scarcity and pollution. Water Pressures highlights collaboration between corporations, NGOs, water experts, community leaders, womens self-help groups, and students as a key to water management, especially in India and the U.S. Well examine how the media (film, TV, radio, print, and Internet) presents water conflicts, scarcity problems, and positive solutions. Well also study the relationship between water, poverty, and the role of women, especially in Third World countries. Students will be invited to help design and participate in a Water Footprint Challenge that will be posted on the Water Pressures Global Water Portal, and campus-wide water conservation actions at Northwestern University.
