Spring English Spring The main aim of this course in methodology is to enable the students to conduct independent research in the form of a Master´s thesis. The course provides knowledge about basic premises for scientific research and understanding of different research methods. It offers training in evaluation of scientific literature and critical reflection on various methodological approaches and forms of interpretation. Specific attention is given to feminist critiques of science, and to research ethics. The course also aims to enable the students to produce a satisfactory research proposal and carry out field work for their Master´s thesis. The main focus of the course will be on qualitative methods of research, although the students should acquire a basic understanding of how to interpret quantitative material. The course will be divided into a shorter theoretical section, and an extensive practical one. Development of a research proposal as well as fieldwork for the master thesis will constitute part of the practical section. The students should be able to Discuss different scientific paradigms and explanatory models and account for basic principles of research ethics. Account for different ways of evaluating quantitative and qualitative research. Show an understanding of issues of credibility, legitimacy and trustworthiness in relation to concrete research projects, including their own. Discuss the theoretical foundations of qualitative methodologies. Demonstrate their ability to read and interpret certain kinds of quantitative material. Demonstrate practical knowledge of qualitative research, including the use of case studies, fieldwork, document analysis (text analysis) and different interview techniques. Demonstrate skills in interpreting and analysing qualitative data material. Produce a satisfactory project proposal. Carry out independent field work. Only students at master level and a part of the masters programme in Gender and Development are accepted. Different forms of teaching will be employed, including lectures, seminars and workshops. In the second part of the course, attention will be devoted to developing the student´s practical skills in qualitative research. Data-collection for the MA thesis is a compulsory part of the course and should be carried out through independent fieldwork in the summer/early autumn between the 2nd and 3rd semesters. The general, theoretical introduction will be followed by a three-hour exam. The practical part of the course will be assessed by portfolio assessment. The portfolio should contain two practical exercises and one short essay (3 pages). A project proposal accepted by supervisor and programme director and completed field work are required for the completion of the course (see GAD 350 for specifications concerning the project proposal) A - F Student evaluationduring and after the course.
