Rice - HANS 286 - SPIRITUALITY IN CONTEMPORARY FILM

HANS 286 - SPIRITUALITY IN CONTEMPORARY FILM Credits: 3 How well do movies present issues of ultimate concern? Are films useful vehicles for meaningful engagement with the "Big Questions" in life, or does the medium of film oversimplify the questions at hand? The course will be heavily discussion oriented with short writing assignments due every other week. Other readings will be used in a supplemental fashion to aid in our discussion of the ideas presented in the films. "Big Question" topics included are God/religion, virtue/justice, success/failure, love/friendship, knowledge/knowing, and free will/determinism. Films included are "Seven" by David Fincher, "Rushmore" by Wes Anderson, "Lost in Translation" by Sofia Coppola, "Memento" by Christopher Nolan, "Fargo" by the Joel and Ethan Coen, and "About a Boy" by Paul and Chris Weitz.
