The term postmodernism refers to a very complex ideological movement that concerns the entire cognitive field, from music to architecture, from movies to philosophy, from technology to sociology. As an academic subject or object of study its origin can be dated to the middle 1980 s, but as a historical process it is much more difficult to date. The difference between modernism and postmodernism is based on the values imbedded in one s work and actions. Modernism sees the fragmentation of the subject as a tragic consequence of a world regarded as unintelligible and an objectivity that is impossible to reach. The postmodern thinker, on the other hand, sees optimistically on all these factors and strives to deepen them. One thing is meant by modernism within literary studies and another is meant by it within the field of the history of ideas. Within literary science, modernism refers to the works of Joyce, Eliot, Pound, Proust and Kafka. A new way of writing that throughout the first years of the 20th century is characterized by, among other things, the impressionistic character of the discourse, subjectivity, a multitude of perspectives, fragmentation of forms and non-continuous discourses. During this period the borders between high and popular culture disappear.

The vast continent of Africa is so rich and diverse in it´s culture, that not only clear changes from one country to another take place, but within individual countries many different cultures can be found. Much of Africa´s cultural activity centers on the family and the ethnic group. Art, music, and oral literature serve to reinforce existing religious and social patterns. The Westernized minority, influenced by European culture and Christianity, first rejected African traditional culture, but with the independence and the rise of African nationalism, a cultural revival ocurred.Â
