Duke - LIVING THROUGH THE GREAT WAR

In this seminar, we will examine the experiences of men and women who lived during the First World War, particularly the ways they made sense of the senseless conflict. Why did they go to war willingly at first, and how did they -- especially the survivors -- come to terms with the horror and pointlessness of the war? We will also examine the reactions of subsequent generations of Europeans and North Americans, including ourselves, who also have "lived through" the War by means of the effect that the war had on subsequent history. We will read poems, letters, novels and memoirs and see films made by participants in the war and by those in later generations who have tried to understand it.

Duke - ORIGINS OF AMER CONSTITUTION

Between 1776 and 1791 Americans created and replaced fundamental institutions of state and national government, amid war, economic dislocation and the fear of social instability. We will use texts from the period to explore how participants in these events were influenced in their actions by political ideals, practical goals and other considerations, given their understanding of human nature and history, and in the light of their own accumulating experiences. The central focus of the course will be the federal Constitution: how the framers debated and formulated its provisions, how advocates argued for or against ratifying the proposed Constitution, and why the framers clashed in amending and implementing its provisions.

Duke - PLANTATIONS IN HST PERSPECTIVE

Freedom is a hall mark of the American experience and a problem in the American experience. It has also been a contested hallmark. This course explores the problem of freedom in the aftermath of emancipation in the U.S. Why and how was the meaning of freedom re-conceptualized? How did the process, design, and execution of emancipation expose tensions in the very meaning of freedom—between political freedom and economic freedom? How did ideologies of race inform how Americans thought about (and legislated about) freedom and citizenship for former slaves? What were the legacies of the Reconstruction era for subsequent U.S. and the problems of race and freedom?

Duke - FIRST-YEAR SEMINAR (TOP)

Political radicalism and extremism have shaped the world across the whole spectrum of modern experience, including our political life, ideas and culture. What are the roots of these movements in the modern world? Using modern Russian history as a case study this course explores the origins of political radicalism and extremism in the intellectual and revolutionary traditions of the 19th and 20th centuries. We begin with the forerunners of these modern movements in Tsarist Russia, take up the tumultuous events of the Russian Revolution and trace out their influences right through the dramatic fall of the Soviet Union and on into the present day in Vladamir Putin's Russia. Course materials will include first hand accounts, political treatises, great literary works and excerpts from landmark twentieth-century Russian films.

Duke - LATINO IDENTITY/ACTIVISM

The relatively recent influx of Latinos in North Carolina and elsewhere in the South has intensified debates over not only U.S. immigration policy but also American identity in general. This seminar for first-year students only aims to contextualize historically these debates by exploring aspects of the 20th century Latino experience. From ethnic Mexicans and Guatemalans to Puerto Ricans and Cuban Americans, Latinos have a long history of building distinct communities and identities as part of their American experience, often in response to widespread discrimination by the larger society. Thus, Latinos have complicated relationships with native “white” Americans and African Americans, as well as each other. Through both secondary and primary sources, we will explore the development of Latino culture and politics during the last 100 years – including the construction of the term “Latino,” as opposed to Mexican, Chicano, Puerto Rican, etc. Students should expect to read and write extensively in this seminar.

Duke - REFORMATION AND RESISTANCE

"Reformation and Resistance: Luther to Hilter." Were the teachings of the Protestant Reformers of the 16th century responsible for German submissiveness and the relative lack of an effective German resistance to Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich? The seminar focuses on this question. It will be offered in two parts. The first part examines the concepts of state and church and the attitude toward revolution and resistance to government held by the main leaders of the Continental Protestant Reformation, Martin Luther, Ulrich Zwingli, John Calvin and others. The second part defines the nature and extent of the German resistance to Adolf Hitler. Based on readings, class discussions and their individual research, students at the end of the seminar, will be asked to answer the central seminar question. Cross-listed with History 49S.05.

Duke - TOPICS THIRD WORLD/WEST

The main purpose of this course is to understand the ways in which economy, technology and ideology have developed and constructed the world of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. While most of the course focuses on the period after the industrial revolution in Europe, some of the reading will go further back in time (e.g., the first part of Michael Adas, Machines as the Measure of Man). One theme that will run throughout this course is the overwhelming impact of capitalism in creating a world of great wealth and systemic inequalities between regions of the globe and the implications of that inequality for human relations. Even as technology and commodities create a world market and a material culture spanning manifold cultures, machines become the index of "Western dominance." Ideologies of superiority become a powerful medium through which people in the "West" have perceived and still perceive the rest of the world in which technologies of mass communication play an important part in constructing and disseminating stereotypes.
