Duke - PSYCHO ASPECTS HUMAN DEV

Traces biological, cultural, behavioral, and social arenas of human development throughout the human life span, emphasizing the comparison of socially constructed age groups (e.g., childhood. Age groups are examined in terms of their unique ethical values and challenges as well as the social dilemmas caused by the extension of life expectancy. We compare psychosocial development between (1) men and women, (2) African-Americans, Hispanics, Asians, and Caucasians, and (3) different socioeconomic strata. Students participate in a service learning project with the Duke LEAPS program in which they volunteer at one of several centers in Durham that provide senior care (nursing homes, retirement communities, senior centers, etc.). Daily entries in a LEAPS journal allow students to describe and analyze the social and cultural challenges of growing old in contemporary American society.

Duke - CAPSTONE SEMINAR HUMAN DEVELOP

This course is the capstone course of the Human Development program and, as such, is the final point at which those earning a Human Development Certificate can synthesize and integrate the biological, psychosocial, and cultural perspectives they have learned in their courses for this certificate. Not only does it emphasize the importance of an integrated approach to human development, but it also translates much of the theoretical and research background they have had into real-world explanations. In addition to understanding and integrating the biopsychosociocultural factors that influence development across the life course, this course also prepares students for situations which they will face in the immediate future as well as the life-long developmental challenges they will confront. Issues such as racism, sexism, and ageism serve as starting points for class discussion.
