This course will examine the critical role that science and technology played in the creation of modern European nation-states and empires, 1789-1989. It will look at the close relationship between science and technology and power and ideology in the process of nation-building and the creation of empires. The analysis will involve the major West European nations/states and their Asian, African, and East European possessions or zones of interest.
