Duke - INTRO TO ITALIAN LIT I

An introduction to techniques of literary analysis through close readings of medieval and renaissance texts from a variety of genres (lyric, narrative, drama; political and scientific treatises; historical, autobiographical, and mystical writings) by major authors (Dante, Petrarch, Boccaccio, Catherine of Siena, Poliziano, Leonardo da Vinci, Machiavelli, Ariosto, Galileo) with particular emphasis on not only the works’ strategies of signification, but also their circulation, reception, and adaptation. Musical (Palestrina, Monteverdi) and artistic (Giotto, Botticelli) analogues and elaborations will also be considered, as will the manuscripts and early editions that transmit these works to us (for which some visits to Special Collections will be arranged) in order to define the literary field through an exploration of how literary works are performed orally, visually, theatrically, and bibliographically. Duke - ITALIAN SOCIAL MOVEMENTS

The course is an overview of the Italian social movements from the ’68 to Global Justice Movement (GJM). The labour struggles during the 50s and 60s will be considered, as well as the starting point for the successive social and political struggles. The course starts with a chronology of the key events which shape the Italian social movement experiences. Then it will discuss a series of key topics such as labour, union and party, operaismo, feminism, new social movements, anti-nuclear struggles, social centres and so on. It will conclude with a look at some of the social and political struggles which follow the crisis of the GJM in Italy and the anti-war mobilisation in 2003: they include the precarious workers struggles and the EuroMayDay Parade. Various novels and movies about the different topics focalized will be used throughout the course, in order to show the richness and the complexity of the Italian social movements. In English.
