LOVE 162 - ETIQUETTE AND NETIQUETTE: A PRACTICAL COURSE IN GOOD MANNERS AND GOOD SENSE Credits: 1 This course is designed to give the student the knowledge and practical experience to exercise good manners. The ability to confidently respond to most social and business situations will be addressed beginning with the introduction of oneself as well as introducing others. Table settings, written communications/stationery, gifts and cards, dating (who pays the bill, etc), the consideration of time and setting priorities, aspects of business etiquette, business dress, and the history of good manners will be discussed, reflecting on early citations of accepted codes of conduct and moving forward to the increasing informality we experience today. The class will address digital communications from a social and professional perspective and reflect on the personal nature of communication over the Internet. Each student will be required to collaborate with another student in class to write a paper approximately 10 pages in length. The papers, researching related topics to the subject matter of the course, will be presented in class. LOVE 233 - ASIAN AMERICANS IN THE US Credits: 3 This course is designed to introduce you to the history of Asians in America. We will also look at the greater historical forces in conjunction with the contemporary dynamics that continue to shape Asian American lives. We will not only have our usual lectures and readings, but will incorporate films, documentaries, personal narratives, literature, photographs, and other mediums to accurately capture the Asian American experience in the United States as well. This course is not designed to be a one-way dialogue from the instructor to the student. Thus, we will have group activities periodically to encourage greater participant and feedback from students. LOVE 235 - SEMINAR: INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION Credits: 3 This course will cover major concerns associated with the interaction of individuals from different cultural backgrounds. The course will explore the concept of culture, the role of culture in the communication process, the concepts of alterity (difference) and identity, and problems associated with interaction within the world. The literature in intercultural communication spans Communication, Anthropology, Sociology, Linguistics, Philosophy, and more. We will look at culture and communication at broad levels, dealing with issues of cultural orientation toward time, space, difference, meaning, and other relevant contextual frames of reference that structure and are structured by communicational encounters between members of different cultures.
