This course is an introduction both to musical variety in the world and to some of the central concerns of the field of ethnomusicology. The musics addressed will span a broad geographic area that typically touches most continents and major island groups. In addition to discussing music-stylistic features of the world's regions through in-depth examination of particular traditions within them, issues such as religion, gender, politics, and ethnic or regional identity will be highlighted in relation to their impact on music making across geographic and cultural boundaries.
