The course is designed to prepare teachers to design and implement middle school general music programs. Preservice teachers will develop innovative and imaginative strategies for middle school students, and will also develop their understanding of curriculum, instruction, and assessment for this underdeveloped area in music education. Class will meet at the Skokie School in Winnetka during several days during the quarter so that we can participate in an exemplary curriculum project that fosters fifth grade students' musical understanding.

This is the third in a series of three courses in the music education graduate program at Northwestern devoted to the formal study of research methodology and practice in our field. It is designed to review and help solidify material presented earlier while extending this knowledge into new fields that might be important as a dissertation topic is considered. The primary focus of the class is quantitative techniques and more complicated research designs. Various multivariate statistical procedures are considered, together with designs that deal with multiple kinds of variables.
