Northwestern - MUS_COMP 340-0: Composition Workshop

The course is a workshop for performers and composers working on contemporary music for solo instruments with a focus on the instrument itself as material to be explored. Through theoretical and practical research on the characteristics of the instruments as well as analytic studies of landmark solo pieces of the 20th century repertoire, possibilities of writing for solo instrument will be investigated on. For a final project composers and performers will team up and write/play a new piece.

Northwestern - MUS_COMP 339-0: Composition Concepts & Techniques

The class will survey and discuss aesthetic positions of the past century from a composer's perspective. Some of the most influential aesthetic texts of the 20th century will be read (Hoffmannsthal, Benjamin, Adorno/Horkheimer, Foucault, Derrida, Zaid and others). We will elaborate on connections, contradictions, and contexts of these texts. An important part of the course will be room for discussion regarding implications for our own compositional work and for our own aesthetic position as composers at the beginning of the 21st century.
