HUC 241 gives students the opportunity to produce individual video projects which may serve as a "reel" for transfer or for employment in crafts and creative positions in production. The emphasis is on production of image and sound. Students learn standard formats, such as, narrative, documentary, music video, and TV commercials, and learn how to use the tools and techniques for video production to express their personal visions. Students apply established models for continuity editing and the principles of montage. Students and faculty participate in critical analysis of students' work-on-progress and finished projects.

This course will consider the changing character of the public sphere ? a real or virtual space in which issues affecting the course of society can be freely debated and consensus forged, in which groups vie for legitimacy and ordinary citizens work to define the public good. We will study public sphere theories of the media, with specific attention to television and the Internet. We will consider the following questions: How well do specific media sustain or harm a vital public sphere? Who gets to speak and whose voices are marginalized or silenced? What can citizens and art makers do to contribute to a vital public sphere?
