Organizational behavior is the study of how individuals relate in the workplace, and how group and organizational structures affect individual behavior. This course is organized around these three levels of focus: individuals, groups (or teams), and organizations. We will explore topics such as learning, personality, interpersonal perception, values, ethics, and motivation. WeÂll also examine how individuals fit together into groups, as well as organizational culture and structure, and examine how these concepts can influence behavior in the organization. This class will require you to apply your communication, teamwork, critical thinking, and information synthesis skills in many different ways.

Effective leadership requires knowledge and self-reflection, as well as strategic action. Such leadership should be grounded in the knowledge of foundational theories of leadership, including transformational, behavioral, situational, and contingency models, and the study of individual leaders and organizational contexts of leadership. The goal of the course is to help students define their own vision of leadership, to experience "leadership moments", identify personal aspects of leadership, and recognize that to be an effective leader in the workplace one must know how to motivate and empower people, foster relationships, and influence outcomes. Case studies and structured simulations are used to provide opportunities to "try on" various leadership roles and take strategic action. This course combines classroom lecture and discussion with an online component. For the lecture and discussion components, the class meets every other Saturday: 9/26, 10/10, 10/24, 11/7, 11/21, 12/5. For the online component, students must have ready access to the Internet.

This course will focus on viewing the role of the Human Resources Department within an organization. Emphasis will be on the various HR functions and how the HR Department acts as a focal point trying to balance the needs of the organization and its employees. Students will learn the role of the HR department in achieving the organizationÂs strategy through attracting, retaining, and motivating talented people. Key aspects of the Human Resources function will be analyzed. The linkage between organizational vision, mission, and strategy and the role of human resources within the organization will be explored in depth. Relevant laws, current legal issues, the daily work issues, work-family matters, and the relationship between the employer and the employees will be explored in depth. This course was formerly ORG BEH 320 Human Resource Management. This course combines classroom lecture and discussion with an online component. For the lecture and discussion components, the class meets on alternate Thursdays: 9/24, 10/8, 10/22, 11/5, 11/19, 12/3 and possibly 12/10. This course explains and applies the concepts of strategic planning to various types of organizations. Initial discussions will provide a basic framework for preparing a strategic plan for corporations. We will also consider other types of entities such as non-profits, institutions and government agencies. Practical applications will be developed from case studies and the experiences of the instructor and students. Since we can learn from wide range of situational discussions, we will consider entrepreneurial and established operations, as well as success stories and failures.
