Prerequisites: 210.177 or equivalent score on placement test. This one-year course is entirely conducted in Portuguese. It introduces students to the basic skills in reading, writing and speaking. The focus of the course is on oral communication, however, with extensive training in written and listening skills. Students must complete both semesters with passing grades to receive credit. Language lab is required. May not be taken on a P/F basis.

Emphasis is placed on vocabulary building, ease and fluency in the language through the use of a multi-faceted approach. Materials used immerse students with the cultures of Brazil, Portugal, and Portuguese âspeaking Africa, and reflect the mix of cultures at work in contemporary Lusophone world. Language lab is required. May not be taken on a P/F basis.
