Prereq: One or more courses in one of these: Cognitive Science, Neuroscience, Philosophy, or Psychology â or permission of instructor. What underlies our aesthetic response to art, music, and other facets of human experience? Do identifiable properties of objects and events evoke consistent aesthetic responses, or is beauty mostly in the eye of the beholder? Examining such questions from cognitive science, neuroscience, and philosophical perspectives, this course explores relevant research and theory in the visual, auditory, and tactile domains. Several researchers will discuss their ongoing studies with the class, and students will also have the opportunity to participate in demonstration experiments that illustrate phenomena under discussion.
