Northwestern - RTVF 360-CN: Topics in Screenwriting:

Are you a big fan of shows like The Office, 30 Rock, and Seinfeld? Or animated series like The Simpsons, Family Guy, and South Park? Why not write an episode yourself? Create an original story for Michael Scott, Liz Lemon, or Meg Griffin. Recreate the characters so they sound and act just like they do on TV. In this course, students learn everything needed to know to write a proper (and hilarious) spec script -- pitching, breaking stories, formatting, outlining, writing drafts, and fine-tuning. (Comedy is all about the fine-tuning). You may even consider writing a spec script that you can actually use as a calling card in Hollywood. Though the competition there is fierce, in this course you’ll receive honest and constructive feedback from an instructor who knows the difference between a fantastic script and a so-darn-fantastic-maybe-even-get-you-a-meeting-with-a-producer script.

Northwestern - RTVF 398-CN: Issues in Radio/Television/Film

This course will consider the process of turning great works of fiction into film. We will read novels which are considered in our culture as classics and view their film adaptations, which may (or may not) have become classics in themselves. Moreover, we will consider works which have been filmed multiple times, viewing and comparing two cinematic versions of each novel treated – an early or mid-20th century film and a contemporary adaptation. When faced with a complex literary work, the filmmaker strives for a visual and auditory interpretation which will not only do justice to the spirit of the novel, but which will effectively transfer to the screen. It is that process, and its relative success or failure, upon which we will focus.
