University of Canterbury - Religion, Society and Power

How can we make sense of a world where various religious beliefs and claims increasingly influence and impact upon our lives? Some claim that religion is back - yet in many areas religious practice and belief is also on the decline. How can we make sense of the various conflicting claims made for and about religion - by the media, by activists and by religious groups and authorities? This course first discusses the issues and implications of claims to hold authority and legitimacy in four core areas: The Text, History and Traditions, Sacred Space, and Violence. The course concludes by investigating the counterclaims of Mysticism, the New Age and Postmodernity.
