Northwestern - SESP 351-0: Topics in SESP

This course examines the historical, sociopolitical, and legal contexts of the child welfare system, with a specific focus on child abuse and neglect. Drawing from several disciplines, psychology, social work, and law, we will explore the policies and practices of child welfare systems. These explorations will be viewed from a systemic perspective, using core concepts of culture, privilege, racism, and sexism. One of the core principles of this course is that ìinterlocking systems of oppressionî exist, and therefore using this framework will help in our understanding of what families experience when they are mandated to engage in child welfare agencies, juvenile court proceedings relating to family reunification, and mental health treatment. For example, why and how is it that African American children who are involved in Child Protection Services are two times as likely than White children to be separated from their families? We will also be informed by listening to voices of youth involved in foster care. The course is divided into two parts: Privilege, Power and Difference, and Child Welfare laws, policies, and practices.
