The method of systematic comparison between a small number of cases is frequently used in many different scientific disciplines. The research purposes may be, e.g., exploration, theory development or theory testing. The units of analysis might be, e.g., individuals, formal and informal organisations, countries, cultures, processes, or policy programs. This multidisciplinary course offers a broad overview of how the comparative methods are used in the social sciences, with a focus on research design, as well as how to carry out the case studies and how to draw conclusions. Advantages and shortcomings of different research designs are analysed as well as prcatice, procedure and problems in carrying out the case studies. The course starts with a series of lectures. After that the students will develop practical research designs in a series of workshops. The course is examined thorugh written papers which build upon the workshops. Comparative Methods: Practice, Procedures and Problems is a course in research methods on advanced level in social sciences.

This course in evaluation theories and methods include evaluations of policies, legislation, organisational change, etc. with a critical assessment of evaluation research and the use of evaluation results. Some of the issues that will be discussed in the course are the following: What differentiates evaluation research from other types of social scientific research? What are the relations between evaluations and the political and social context where they will be used? Which are the key questions in evaluation research and how do they relate to the fields where the evaluations are applied and utilized? In this context different models and methods of evaluation will be analyzed and discussed. "Evaluation Research: Theories and Methods" is a course in research methods on advanced level in social sciences.
