A beginning course in Spanish restricted to students with no prior Spanish.

Basque is one of the few non-Indo-European languages that survive in Europe. Spoken in the north of Spain and south of France, Basque is one of the four official languages in Spain. The course is designed to offer the student an introduction to the structure and vocabulary of the Basque language within a communicative framework that incorporates culturally rich content. No previous knowledge of a Romance language is required.

Along with Intensive Intermediate Spanish, this course was originally developed for FLL students and therefore assumes a certain level of motivation to learn languages. The course aims to develop students' ability to communicate in Spanish and to help them acquire the skills necessary to understand oral and written texts. Different aspects of Hispanic culture will be introduced in reading passages and videos. Grading criteria are based on lexical breadth, grammatical accuracy, reading and listening comprehension skills, and a basic knowledge of Spanish-speaking areas.

This course further develops the content presented in SPAN-101 and offers a global perspective on four main topics (migration, drug trafficking, democratic transitions, and political violence) contextualized in four specific regions in Latin America (Argentina, Mexico, Cuba, Colombia). Through extensive and intensive exposure to real written and oral language, students will acquire key vocabulary and the language that characterizes formal genres. Explicit practice of morphosyntax to develop accuracy beyond fluency is key and assumes knowledge of those structures covered in SPAN-101, including the subjunctive, copula, and tense/aspect distinctions.

This course is designed to consolidate the command of grammar and vocabulary through oral practice and presentations as well as through compositions and written exercises. Corrections in class will allow the student to become aware of their own errors and be able to correct the most common ones. The aim of the course is to prepare the student for more advanced level courses. It is recommended for students who obtained a grade below B in Advanced Spanish or Intensive Advanced Spanish and for those who need additional grammar practice. Students who achieve a grade of B or better in these courses may proceed directly to Academic Writing. The course does not count towards the Spanish major or minor.

This course is the culmination of the socio-political and linguistic contents covered in SPAN-101 and SPAN-102. The pedagogical goal of the course is to prepare students for the Oral Proficiency Exam. Consequently, it aims at developing formal communicative skills through a variety of task-based activities, including oral presentations, debates, role-play, panels, and round-table discussions. Students will write five compositions to be critiqued in the classroom before being handed in and a final research paper. There will be workshops, presentations and discussions in class.
