The aim of this unit is to provide Auslan interpreting students with the opportunity to discuss and practice advanced interpreting skills in the specialised area of medical interpreting. Students will analyse the complex linguistic, cultural and ethical challenges of interpreting in medical settings such as doctor-patient appointments, hospitals, and mental health counselling sessions, with consideration given to a range of issues. Students will explore the theoretical foundations of the role of the interpreter, duty of care, preparation techniques, medical terminology and interpreting strategies.

The aim of this unit is to introduce the student to the linguistics of signed languages, with particular reference to Auslan (Australian Sign Language). This unit focuses on issues related to signed language phonology (the structure of signs), morphology (how signs are formed and modified), syntax (the structure of signed phrases and sentences), and semantics (how meaning is expressed in signed languages). Some of the major findings related to signed language variation and use (sociolinguistics) will be explored, as well as aspects of signed language change (historical linguistics). In addition, an overview of the first language acquisition literature (how children learn signed languages) and the most recent research in psycholinguistics (how signed languages are processed in the brain) will be included.

This unit introduces students to state of the art technology in teaching both translation and interpreting. In the study of translation this includes a range of machine-assisted translation tools, search tools and other support tools for translators. In addition, students will be exposed to the tools available in a computer laboratory to support independent learning and team work in translation. In interpreting, students will learn how to use a state-of-the-art language laboratory for group work in teaching and learning in interpreting and for independent learning. In addition, computer search tools will be presented to assist interpreters with their research and glossary development. Students will be encouraged to reflect on the application of the relevant technologies to practice and in particular to their own teaching.
