Forms of art are closely interconnected in children's experiences. In this unit, modules of drama, music and movement, and visual arts are integrated through a perspective of creativity in early childhood. Investigation of current research and practical involvement will enable students to gain insight and understanding into processes of planning and implementing arts experiences with young children.

This unit is designed to enable students to refine their role as an early childhood teacher and to take substantive responsibility for working with young children, staff and families. During the internship, students will have opportunities to develop confidence in justifying their professional decision-making and in responding to the challenges of daily work in an early childhood centre. Students will consolidate their appreciation of teacher research by demonstrating a depth of knowledge about a selected aspect of early childhood practice. The internship is based on a 30 day placement to be completed as three days a week over ten weeks. Students may complete the internship requirements in their own workplace if appropriate.

In consultation with an academic supervisor selected by the student for expertise in the student's chosen topic and for their willingness to act as supervisor, students enrolling in this unit will undertake a comprehensive and critical review of literature providing the theoretical foundations of thought related to the chosen topic. The product of this review could form the basis of future research activity in related units and may be in a publishable format. For students taking this unit in association with other research training units, this critical review of the literature will form the basis of the research project to be completed in ECED858. The product of this unit may be suitable as the basis for further work in a higher degree by research.

For students undertaking the series of research training units contained within a masters program or a series of research training units as a prerequisite to higher degree research, this research project will be based upon the critical review of literature conducted in ECED854. The product of this unit will be suitable for use as a pilot study for a higher degree by research, or as the basis of a research proposal to support candidacy for doctoral study.
