This course considers some of the French answers to questions such as: How do peoples and cultures envision the end of a century, especially when it coincides with and is magnified by the end of a millennium? and How do they, afterwards, reposition themselves in order to confront the beginnings of a new century and millennium? We analyze and compare the 19th- and 20th-century fins de siècle with the one available fin de millénaire -what people called in France l'An Mil -trying to discover both their similarities and their unavoidable differences. We then explore some of the perspectives for the 21st century, as debated in France nowadays.
