We explore the changing image of the hero in modern Jewish culture as reflected in literary works by modern Jewish writers of Europe, America, and Israel. We consider such heroes as the artist, the immigrant, the Holocaust survivor, the Zionist pioneer, and the Israeli soldier. We also consider the figure of the antihero, who represents the difficulty of conceiving of a hero in modern times. Works by Babel, Kafka, Singer, Yezierska, Ozick, Agnon, Amos Oz, A. B. Yehoshua, and Appelfeld. All readings will be in English. 1.000 Credit Hours 1.000 Lecture hours Levels: Extra Credit Graduate, Undergraduate Schedule Types: Primary Meeting Undergraduate College College Judaic Studies Department Return to Previous New Search

Recent historical debate has centered on the Holocaust and the question of "uniqueness." Was the Nazi slaughter of Europe's Jews an incomparable event? We address this question by comparing the Holocaust with the genocide of Ottoman Armenians during World War I, among others. Our goal: to analyze the historical, political, and societal roots of the genocidal process. 1.000 Credit Hours 1.000 Lecture hours Levels: Graduate, Undergraduate Schedule Types: Primary Meeting Undergraduate College College Judaic Studies Department Return to Previous New Search
