The work of the Argentinean writer Jorge Luis Borges is considered one of the most important of the Twentieth-Century literature. In this course students will read and discuss the main works of Borges focusing on some of the recurring topics such as the distinction between reality and fiction, and between original and translation, the universe as a library, the representation of the absolute, history and myth, the relationship between literature and philosophy, among others, while we also situate his work within the social and political context of 20th century Argentina and Latin America. Further, we will explore the political dimension of his work, his concern with ethics and political philosophy, and his conception of writing as a kind of therapeutic practice. Readings include Borges' main works as well as texts by other Argentinian authors such as Roberto Arlt, MartÃnez Estrada, and passages from other European and American writers that are important references in Borges, such as Dante, Pascal, Poe, and Kafka.
