Georgetown - Introduction to Arabian Nights

This course is essentially a reading course, designed to enable students who had 3 years of Arabic to plunge into the reading of complete stories of substantial length in order to start acquiring in-depth analytical, reflective, and fluent reading skills. Given the little time we have for class, the emphasis will be on self-reliant preparation. Students are expected to gain mastery of the texts almost independently, to develop their own responses, ask their own questions. This will facilitate the exchange of ideas in class. The course is also intended to explore some of "Nights'" common themes and narrative strategies. An important additional aim is to review and learn more salient points of grammar and build up vocabulary.
