Students will continue to review and expand the basic structures of Spanish with special emphasis on more difficult grammatical aspects not covered in SPAN 103, develop more formal vocabulary, and further improve both oral and written skills. Students will broaden their understanding of several aspects of Hispanic culture and literature via movies and written texts. Four key components that will assist students to attain these goals are grammar, vocabulary, language awareness, and practice/participation.

Georgetown - Spanish Grammar Review

This course is designed to consolidate the command of grammar and vocabulary through oral practice and presentations as well as through compositions and written exercises. Corrections in class will allow the student to become aware of their own errors and be able to correct the most common ones. The aim of the course is to prepare the student for more advanced level courses. It is recommended for students who obtained a grade below B in Advanced Spanish or Intensive Advanced Spanish and for those who need additional grammar practice. Students who achieve a grade of B or better in these courses may proceed directly to Academic Writing. The course does not count towards the Spanish major or minor.

Georgetown - Oral Review: Contemporary Hispanic Cultures (SFS Students Only)

This course is the culmination of the socio-political and linguistic contents covered in SPAN-101 and SPAN-102. The pedagogical goal of the course is to prepare students for the Oral Proficiency Exam. Consequently, it aims at developing formal communicative skills through a variety of task-based activities, including oral presentations, debates, role-play, panels, and round-table discussions. Hispanic films and readings on current events in Spain and Latin America serve as springboards for the oral activities.

We will study the different ways in which the new continent and its inhabitants entered into the European imagination. Among the themes to be discussed in class are the cultural baggage that each of the cultures had before coming into contact, the various aspects of “otherness,” as well as problems of textuality and representation. Among texts to be analyzed are some of the pre-Columbian indigenous myths, the initial account of the encounter between the Old and the New Worlds by Christopher Columbus, the description of the conquest of Mexico by Hernán Cortés, the history of the Incas as described by the Mestizo Garcilaso de la Vega, the epic account of the war with the Araucanian Indians by Ercilla, some selections of Indian and Mestizo chroniclers representing the vision of the vanquished, and, finally, Sor Juana’s finest poetry and prose written in the Viceregal period.
