All activities based on scientific understanding require knowledge about analysing and handling information, data, and uncertainty. After successfully finishing this course you will be able to formulate hypotheses based on a scientific problem, design experiments to test the hypotheses, and analyse and interpret the experimental results. By focusing on practical applications rather than the underlying statistical theories we introduce basic statistical concepts and methods in a way that is easily understood. Due to the extensive use of computer simulations you will soon acquire the basic skills needed to plan, carry out, and evaluate scientific experiments.

This course is an advanced course in ecology and it aims to integrate theoretical knowledge within aquatic ecology and hydrology to be used within practical water management. For the first time in Scandinavia, Lund University is offering a specialised graduate course in European and International Tax Law. This Masters course is designed to meet the market´s demand for cutting-edge knowledge on multi-jurisdictional tax issues. It provides an opportunity to study the legal rules dealing with European and International tax problems, both from a direct and an indirect tax perspective, in a dynamic setting with students from around the world. The Master course runs from September to June on a full time basis. The two semesters are each split up into two parts, of which the first focuses on the functioning of direct (income tax) and indirect taxes (VAT, excises and customs). This part also focuses on studies on the relation between taxation and public finance, comparative tax law issues, sources of EU law and an introduction to International Tax Law among other subjects. The second part of the semester deals with subjects such as the methods of interpretation of European Union Law applied to taxes, the Internal Market and taxes, customs union and indirect taxes, access to the fundamental freedoms in the EU Treaty and judicial remedies. The students will be able to specialise in the second semester in either direct or indirect taxation. The course on direct taxation will deal with both positive and negative integration and individual and corporate taxation. The course on indirect taxation focuses on the European VAT (value added tax) system, the harmonized system for excises and customs treatment in the EU. In particular, the relation between the indirect taxes is treated extensively. On the second part of the second semester the master thesis is carried out. Graduates from this programme will be well prepared for jobs as tax administrators, tax consultants and tax policy-makers. The Masters degree may also benefit judges dealing with tax law issues and can serve as good preparation for PhD studies in European and International Taxation.

KEMB03. This course deals with theoretical and practical aspects of biochemical techniques in the areas of: protein purification and characterization, including precipitation, gel filtration, ion-exchange, adsorption and affinity chromatography; 2D-electrophoresis including isoelectric focusing and SDS-PAGE; mass-spectrometry; electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy; information search. The extensive experimental part of the course involves all the methods mention above and is performed as specific short projects. Under supervision the student will search information in scientific databases, plan experiments, perform the experiments, critically evaluate the results, discuss problems and results as well as present the results orally and in written form.

KEMC10. The aim of the course is to provide in-depth theoretical knowledge and experience of different steps in modern drug design and development. The course requires that participants possess a broad general knowledge in analytical chemistry, organic chemistry and biochemistry. The course discusses general pharmacological principles, such as drug effects, mechanisms of action, metabolism, use, and chemical structures. Methods, techniques, and tools for searching novel candidate drugs (drug development), computer models for prediction of pharmacological properties and structure-activity relationships are discussed, as are optimization of pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic properties of drug molecules. Finally, important therapeutic areas are discussed, such as drugs of the nerve system, hormone drugs, drugs affecting the heart, respiratory drugs, anaesthetics, sedative drugs, antivirals, antibiotics, and cancer drugs.

The course contains an advanced treatment of the theory for analytical separation and covers gas chromatography, liquid chromatography (HPLC) and capillary electrophoresis, as well as mass spectrometry.
