HUMA 373 - NEW GERMAN CINEMA Credits: 3 From the 1960 to 2000, Germany has developed a very distinct auteur cinema with independent filmmakers such as Fassbinder, Herzog, Wenders, Adlon, Trotta, Sander, Brueckner, Doerrie, Garnier, Tykwer, and others. The first 20 years of German film were oriented on coming to terms with the fascist past; the second 20 years focused on more contemporary issues. Politicians and artists have forged specific ideas about female beauty. Films in particular accomplish this task through the face and the body of the actress who becomes the incarnation of Italy and the embodiement of the cultural, political and historical heritage of a nation and its people. Actresses like Anna Magnani, Silvana Mangano, Claudia Cardinale and Sophia Loren above all, lent their bodies to a cinematic corpus that became part of the Italian national identity.
