Today, as East Asia gradually recovers its erstwhile traditional position as the economical centre of the world, the understanding of the established regional paradigms in politics, social and religious life becomes a more important task than ever before. The aim of this course is to give a primary source-based understanding of East Asia’s regional traditions, with an added emphasis upon their concrete socio-political modes of functioning and their mutual interactions. Students will be given a thorough survey of the socio-political conditions of the Zhou and pre-Qin times, and be assigned reading of the main materials of the Confucian tradition as well as the Moist, Legalist and Taoist traditions, formed at that period and which have since continuously influenced the region up to the present day. Then, the regional Buddhist traditions will be studied through comprehending both the basic devotional and philosophical texts and the Chinese, Korean, and Japanese commentaries to them. In the same way, the course will include both the main Song Dynasty Neo-Confucian and Ming Dynasty Wang Yangming school texts. All source reading will be provided in English.

The forcible inclusion of the East Asian region into the capitalist world-system, which began in the mid-19th C. with the Treaty of Nanjing (1842) and Commodore Perry’s expedition to Japan (1853), brought with it momentous changes in the ideology of East Asian societies, as they were now “synchronized” with the capitalist West’s historical time. Those new ideologies that came into being as a result of East Asia’s “localization” of the imported meta-narratives of “race” and “nation”/”nation-state”, “revolution”/”socialism”, “development”/”progress”, Christianity, and many others, are the topics the course focuses upon. Special attention is paid to the ways in which the nationalist ideologies in Japan, China, and Korea influenced each other, and the strategies used by the East Asian nationalists to construct both the historic pictures of the past and geopolitical projects for the future. The course is also aimed at tracing the pedigrees of the discursive strategies used for constructing the stereotyped visions of things “Oriental”/”national”: “the Yellow Race”, “Oriental culture”, “Confucian/Asian values”, “wise mother, good wife”, etc. All the topics are treated in a comparative perspective, with ample use of material from all the three main East Asian cultures. The period between 1868 (Meiji Restoration) and 1910-1911 (colonization of Korea and revolution in China), when the archetypical regional interpretations of “nation”, “race”, “modernity”, “religion” and so on were first constructed, is especially emphasized. All the source materials and secondary literature assigned are in principle in English, but those students who have already acquired proficiency in one of the East Asian languages may also be provided with individualized assignments in the language(s) of their choosing.

They will have to understand, through the reading of the excerpts from Moist, Legalist and Taoist texts, the atmosphere of intellectual competition and exchange, which shaped the Confucian tradition of the pre-Qin times, while the reading of the Han Dynasty (202 B.C.E – 220 C.E.) texts by Dong Zhongshu, Ban Gu, Sima Qian and other authors provides understanding of the ways the “Imperial Confucianism”, the dominant discourse of power of the subsequent epochs, was formed. Then, the regional Buddhist traditions will be studied through comprehending both the basic devotional and philosophical texts and the Chinese, Korean, and Japanese commentaries to them. In the same way, the course will include both the main Song Dynasty (960-1279) Neo-Confucian and Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) Wang Yangming school texts, and the commentarial literature from Korea and Japan. When South Korean President Kim Dae Jung received his Nobel Peace Prize in 2000, the decision of the Nobel Committee was based on appreciation of his work “to overcome more than 50 years of war and hostility between North and South Korea” and “for South Korea’s reconciliation with other neighbouring countries, especially Japan”. Why are both of Kim’s endeavours proceeding with such enormous difficulty, making little progress? How are the Cold War alliances in East Asia being realigned, and why is the belligerent anti-North Korean position of US neocons met with deep scepticism by so many in US-allied South Korea? How are historical memories used for internal political mobilizations and external diplomatic offensives by the East Asian states? These and other questions pertaining both to the Cold War alliance system in East Asia and the post-Cold War political and diplomatic realignments will be explored in this course. It will focus especially on the Japanese conservatives’ drive for gradual rearmament of Japan, the policies of Kim Dae Jung’s successors in South Korea towards the Northern neighbour, and China’s new quest for regional leadership and nationalist self-assertion – and the (ab)uses of historical memory in the context of those politics.

The topic of the course is the forms of capital-labour relationship characteristic of the countries of East Asia, both those, which have been incorporated into the capitalist world-system for relatively longer periods (Japan, South Korean, Taiwan) and those, recently incorporated (China, Vietnam). While the exclusion of labour from the dominant political bodies and authoritative forms of culture is assumed to be a common feature of the capitalist accumulation and “development” in all these countries, the course focuses on the important differences between the “soft authoritarian” managerial models of post-war Japan, “harder” modes of exclusion and cooptation of different sectors of labour in South Korea and Taiwan, and essential disenfranchisement/disempowerment of labour in China/Vietnam. It gives both the overviews of the predominant forms of labour control/exploitation on macro-level, and more detailed case studies-based analyses of the modes of domination and control on the micro-level of the concrete workplaces. It also analyzes how the values of “labour” are constructed in the hegemonic cultural paradigms in the countries in question.
