The course presents and discusses statistical methods for analysing single equation econometric models. Regression theory will therefore have a central place both in lectures and seminars. The various tests and estimation methods are illustrated by using real data collected from economics. In order to analyse cross section and time-series data properly the course will also show how to test for and to estimate regression parameters in regressions equations when the random disturbances are allowed to be heteroskedastic or auto-correlated.

The course is an introduction to modern theories of justice in the distribution of income and other economic goods. The subject of social justice, being a normative one, was for many years not considered suitable for academic research. The appearance in 1971 of John Rawls: A Theory of Justice in 1971 changed the prevailing academic climate. Since then, a steady stream of papers and books have appeared. The course will make the student acquainted with the most important modern schools of thought. We will discuss, in particular, the foundation and consequences of modern utilitarianism and economic welfare theory; John Rawls's theory of the social contract; Amartya Sen's capability approach ; libertarianism as propounded by Robert Nozick. We will also attempt to analyse, and give content to, notions like equality of opportunity, equality of outcome, economic rewards according to deserts.

The course gives and elementary but concise introduction to dynamic models and dynamic analysis in macroeconomics. The method of dynamic analysis is applied to wage-and price formation and inflation, and to fiscal policy and monetary policy analysis in an open economy context. The course also contains an introduction to the real business cycle model. At the beginning of the course we explain why a dynamic approach is required to understand and predict how an economy realistically reacts to shocks or a policy change. The course gives a step-by-step introduction to the key theoretical concepts relating to statics and dynamic analysis and to the corresponding model types. The supply side of the open economy, is one main area of application of dynamic analysis, and the course shows how competing models of wage and price setting can be formulated within one and the same dynamic framework, and how the different models lead to different predictions about how the economy react to shocks and policy changes. In the analysis we are also able to integrate the market for foreign exchange and the choice of monetary policy regime (instruments and targets) and to show that the dynamic response of the macro economy is regime-dependent. Since the emphasis is on dynamics analysis for the ‘policy horizon’ the models are formulated in discrete (calendar) time.

In the master’s thesis the student has to write about an economic topic. Some kind of original contribution is required. The topic of the thesis may be any problem that can fruitfully be analyzed with economic theories or methods. The size of the thesis should correspond to 1 term, i.e. 5 months full-time work. Supervision is compulsory.

This is a basic course in advanced econometrics. Econometrics deals with evaluating economic theories and models, and investigating their validity by confronting them with data, using statistical methods. An important part of econometrics is concerned with developing methods for analyzing relationships in multi-equation models, with due regard to (a) the non-experimental, multi-causal nature of most economic variables, and (b) measurement errors.
