Universitetet i Oslo - Economics of the Firm

The course focuses on the relationship between the firm and its management on the one hand, and its sources of finances on the other hand (banks, share holders, etc.). Emphasis is put on incentives, such as: incentives for the management to perform in the interest of owners, incentives for creditors and owners to monitor the firm’s management, and incentives for owners to fulfil obligations to creditors. These and related issues are studied by using models from contract theory, in particular moral-hazard models, but also models of asymmetric information and models of incomplete contracts.

Universitetet i Oslo - Distributive Justice

The course is an introduction to modern theories of justice in the distribution of income and other economic goods. The subject of social justice, being a normative one, was for many years not considered suitable for academic research. The course will make the student acquainted with the most important modern schools of thought. We will discuss, in particular, the foundation and consequences of modern utilitarianism and economic welfare theory; John Rawls's theory of the social contract; Amartya Sen's capability approach ; libertarianism as propounded by Robert Nozick. Universitetet i Oslo - Open Economy Macroeconomics

Included in the course is a thorough introduction to the foreign exchange market and a brief discussion of world level interactions. A major part of the course deals with the dynamic effects (effects over time) of economic shocks and policies. Universitetet i Oslo - Introductory dynamic macroeconomics

The course gives and elementary but concise introduction to dynamic models and dynamic analysis in macroeconomics. The method of dynamic analysis is applied to wage-and price formation and inflation, and to fiscal policy and monetary policy analysis in an open economy context. The course also contains an introduction to the real business cycle model. At the beginning of the course we explain why a dynamic approach is required to understand and predict how an economy realistically reacts to shocks or a policy change. The course gives a step-by-step introduction to the key theoretical concepts relating to statics and dynamic analysis and to the corresponding model types. The supply side of the open economy, is one main area of application of dynamic analysis, and the course shows how competing models of wage and price setting can be formulated within one and the same dynamic framework, and how the different models lead to different predictions about how the economy react to shocks and policy changes. In the analysis we are also able to integrate the market for foreign exchange and the choice of monetary policy regime (instruments and targets) and to show that the dynamic response of the macro economy is regime-dependent. Since the emphasis is on dynamics analysis for the ‘policy horizon’ the models are formulated in discrete (calendar) time.
