This unit provides a foundation for the study of systems from both theoretical and applied thermodynamic perspectives. Students study pure thermodynamics and thermodynamics of ions in solution as well as an elective module. Students are able to choose between either high temperature (metallurgical) thermodynamics or statistical mechanics (physical thermodynamics), depending on their course of study. Examples are drawn from a wide range of applications relevant to chemistry, extractive metallurgy and physics.

The unit covers theories and quantitative techniques to understand interactions between water, air and soil, and ecosystem response to these interactions.

Students are introduced to each step of the investigative process, starting from asking a scientific and sound question, developing a sampling strategy, collecting and analysing the data, testing the hypothesis, interpreting the data and eventually drawing one or more conclusions/recommendations. Students are also asked to use these basic principles in a semester-long project that investigates a specific question of their choice. Lectures cover some of the basic statistical background likely to be used in experimental design and a large range of environmental studies. Students are expected to attend a field trip, usually a day and a night.

This unit provides an overview of surface and subsurface hydrology with a focus on heterogeneity and variability, multiple-flow pathways and residence times, water balance and scale issues, with a motivation towards eventual predictions of water quantity and quality. In particular, the unit focuses on the partitioning of water and energy at the land surface and illustrates the processes of precipitation, infiltration and run-off generation, groundwater flow and transport, and evapotranspiration and streamflow routing through exposition of fundamental theories combined with the analysis and interpretation of observed data. Apart from lectures, regular assignments and the use of the computer for data analyses, there are one or two field trips organised during the unit to expose students to field situations and approaches to measurements.
