This unit has two main themes—the idea of 'Asia' and the diversity of Asian identities. The unit begins by exploring the meanings and representations of 'Asia' and 'Asians'. It then examines the diversity of societies and cultures in Asia through concepts such as 'identity', 'culture' and 'the nation-state'. Identities based on ethnicity, religion, nationalism, the family, work, gender and region are analysed. Students study ethnographies, media representations, literature and case studies that portray a wide variety of Asian cultures. The unit thus provides an introduction to Asian language units and interdisciplinary Asian Studies units and a basic grounding for the study of Asia-related units offered by various disciplines.

Rapid social transformation characterises the Asian region. This unit examines the destabilising 'flows' of knowledge and information, people, goods and services, ideas and ideologies, resources and pollution in contemporary Asia, examining their evolution, production and social and cultural dimensions. The unit introduces processes and phenomena such as colonialism and post-colonialism, resistance, modernity and globalisation, and explores their relevance and significance in contemporary Asia. Topics covered may include refugees, popular culture, human rights, feminism, the environment, media and communications, urbanisation, tourism and labour migration.

How does culture serve the political objectives of the state? Close interaction between the state and sociocultural life has been a fundamental feature of countries in the Asian region. In recent years most Asian nations have experienced extraordinarily rapid economic change, resulting in acute social tensions, including huge disparities in income, aggravated rural–urban dichotomies, ethnic conflict, regional separatism, gender inequalities, environmental devastation, and the dislocation and relocation of huge numbers of people. The economic crisis of the late 1990s which affected a number of countries has, in some cases, brought these tensions to the surface. This unit seeks to explain the role culture plays in holding these societies together, and the extent to which culture is guided (or controlled) by the state for this purpose. The unit also looks at how state-sponsored cultural forms are resisted and subverted by various groups within society. Special attention is given to Southeast Asia, China and Japan.

Since decolonisation most Asian states have strived to create homogeneous national communities and a single national identity. However, ethnic identities continue to persist and in many cases are experiencing a resurgence. How have they managed to survive? What is the reason for their resurgence? What does this mean for the cohesion of Asian nation-states? These themes are explored through case studies of ethnic relations in the nations of East and Southeast Asia. Special attention is given to the Southeast Asian Chinese, examining such issues as identity, integration with host countries, and their ambiguous relationship with the People's Republic of China at a time of rapid economic and social change.

This unit explores the major political, social and cultural issues which have characterised the relationship between Australia and the Asian region. It critically examines a range of arguments about the way in which the Australian nation-state has dealt with the external and internal dimensions of an Asian presence, from issues of security and trade to immigration and multiculturalism. The unit also explores cultural issues in the relationship, including the representation of 'Asian' peoples and cultures within Australia, and the construction of identity. Students debate questions such as—how have trade and security issues shaped Australia–Asia relations? How have these relations been affected by changing ideas of 'race'? How is Asian culture consumed in contemporary mainstream Australia? What is multiculturalism, and has it made Australia a 'tolerant' country? How has globalisation affected the status of Asian and Anglo-Australian identities in Australia? And how is 'Australia' perceived and understood within Asian contexts? The unit takes a multidisciplinary approach which draws on the latest research in political and cultural history, international relations, identity politics and cultural studies, in exploring the complex dimensions of these issues.

This unit explores the ideologies of national unity, stability and development in contemporary Indonesia and studies their implementation since 1965 through examination of topics such as the national education system, family planning, gender relations and the role of the national language. Indonesia is a very complex nation-state and students analyse changing social relations in this multicultural society mainly through ethnographies and literature. A major theme of the unit is the interplay of regional, religious and ethnic identities within the context of the demands of the nation-state.

Since Sukarno inspired millions with his thundering speeches, Indonesia has intrigued, frightened and enchanted outsiders. Drawing on a wide range of film and documentary sources, this unit explores the ideas, the personalities and the movements that shaped the world's fourth most populous nation. The unit encourages a sympathetic understanding of the dynamics of Indonesian social change using an approach that integrates historical, political and sociological perspectives. It spans the second half of the twentieth century and culminates in the tumultuous events since 1998 that have seen separatism, communal violence and terrorism chip at the welds of Australia's largest neighbour.
