University of Western Australia - Julians and Julio-Claudians

This unit provides an introduction to Roman history at one of its most exciting and significant periods—the establishment and expansion of the Roman Empire under the successors of the first Emperor Augustus in the first century AD, beginning with the accession of the much reviled Tiberius and ending with the reign of Nero. University of Western Australia - Glory and Grandeur

In the broad sweep of history, a handful of periods and cultures are of outstanding importance. Among these, the civilisations of the ancient Greeks and Romans stand out as times of remarkable achievements and significant technological advances in which many of the foundations of the modern world were laid by such charismatic figures as Homer, Socrates, Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar and Jesus Christ. During these two millennia the Greeks spread abroad and settled in numerous places around the Mediterranean, the foundations of modern democracy were laid and the Roman Empire subsequently came to rule over most of the civilised world, in what has been called 'the boundless grandeur of the Roman peace'. Students are given an outline of the history of this period and are encouraged to achieve an understanding of the processes by which they can study it today from the written and archaeological evidence. Topics include urbanisation, political and social development, warfare and religion, and the enduring legacy of the period. The unit is an excellent basis for further study in ancient history and provides a good background for studies in archaeology, European studies, history and philosophy.
