The areas covered include patient history-taking and examination, together with experience in the assessment and selection of special investigations; assessment and surgical removal from the jaws of simple erupted, unerupted and ectopic teeth; appreciation of the role of surgery in the management of acute and chronic periapical disease; pre-prosthetic surgery; diagnosis and management of cysts of the jaws and related structures; investigation and management of disorders of the salivary glands; exposure to current methods of investigation, diagnosis and surgical management of dento-facial deformity; recognition and conservative and surgical management of sinus disease of odontogenic origin; assessment and the primary management of injuries to the hard and soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial region; diagnosis and management of disorders of the temporomandibular joint and associated structures; recognition and management of oral manifestations of systemic disease; exposure to the techniques of general anaesthesia, sedation and general pain control; recognition and management of pre-malignant lesions of the oral cavity and diagnosis of oral malignancies; and familiarisation with operating theatre procedures, with particular reference to operating theatre safety and infection control.
