This unit considers program development, design and assessment for dental education. Students are shown the methodology of selection of content, objectives, materials, assessment techniques, constraints within dental school settings and evaluation procedures. The evaluation of needs and occupational analysis are described. Development and implementation of programs, which take into consideration the needs of learners with special challenges such as students with English as a second language and those with special needs, are considered in the dental school context. In consultation with an agreed mentor, students undertake an action research study of an area chosen from their perceived needs in their teaching situation or undertake a supervised teaching project. Some examples of possible action research projects are to design and implement strategies to promote active participation from all students during learning/teaching sessions; prepare high quality audiovisual materials to support course objectives; and analyse curriculum objectives, content, teaching methods, assessment and evaluation for a new unit of study.

This core unit comprises lectures and tutorials on the theoretical aspects of the basic management of oral and maxillofacial surgical cases. The areas covered include patient history-taking and examination, together with experience in the assessment and selection of special investigations; assessment and surgical removal from the jaws of simple erupted, unerupted and ectopic teeth; appreciation of the role of surgery in the management of acute and chronic periapical disease; pre-prosthetic surgery; diagnosis and management of cysts of the jaws and related structures; investigation and management of disorders of the salivary glands; exposure to current methods of investigation, diagnosis and surgical management of dento-facial deformity; recognition and conservative and surgical management of sinus disease of odontogenic origin; assessment and the primary management of injuries to the hard and soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial region; diagnosis and management of disorders of the temporomandibular joint and associated structures; recognition and management of oral manifestations of systemic disease; exposure to the techniques of general anaesthesia, sedation and general pain control; recognition and management of pre-malignant lesions of the oral cavity and diagnosis of oral malignancies; and familiarisation with operating theatre procedures, with particular reference to operating theatre safety and infection control.
