University of Western Australia - French for the Professions

This unit starts with an overview of French people at work, and theories about the links between work and wellbeing. The unit then proceeds to look at specific occupations, the tasks they involve, the qualifications they require, and the status they grant. Some aspects of French society pertinent to work are looked at, such as political institutions, industrial relations, laws and the economic situation of twenty-first century France. Further, to understand how people become qualified for jobs, it is necessary to understand the French education system, its strengths and weaknesses. The unit also looks at existing discriminating practices that may have an impact on people's careers. Although the unit introduces a wealth of factual data, it exposes students to many works of imagination (short stories and films) in order to build a more complete and nuanced picture of French people at work. Altogether the unit allows for a comprehensive and up-to-date view of French society and cultural production.

University of Western Australia - Francophone Literature: Caribbean

Following their colonisation by the French in 1635, the reign of slavery until 1848 and the subsequent status of the islands as overseas departments of France (DOM) since 1946, the French Caribbean people have suffered from a profound sense of alienation regarding their cultural and personal identities. This situation has been worsened by the fact that France represents both the Other (the islands are possessions of France) and the Same (the French Caribbean people have interiorised the language and culture of France). The three books in this unit are studied as the literary expression of this complex and rich heritage.

University of Western Australia - Francophone Literature: Africa

This unit is an introduction to the literature and culture of French-speaking African countries. Three famous writers have been selected to represent the depth and breadth of literature written in French by African writers: Camara Laye and Mariama Bâ, two influential writers from Senegal, and Calixthe Beyala, representing a new generation of African authors. Laye writes the nostalgic tale of his childhood as a boy growing up in a small African traditional village, whereas Mariama Bâ presents the view of a woman oppressed by African traditions such as polygamy. Calixthe Beyala uses fiction to explore issues of immigration, the clash between tradition and modernity.

University of Western Australia - French Intellectuals

This unit is taught in English jointly by the disciplines of European Languages and History. The twentieth century was an exciting period in French intellectual history. The eruption of the Dreyfus affair in 1898, a judiciary scandal that shook the Third Republic, marked the beginning of a new phase for the French intellectual. During this time the idea of the intellectuel engagé, or politically committed intellectual, began to take shape. A number of distinct waves characterise twentieth-century French intellectual history, including the historical avant-garde (Marcel Proust), the Front Populaire and surrealism (André Gide and André Breton), existentialism (Jean-Paul Sartre), feminism (Simone de Beauvoir), the sciences humaines and psycho-Marxist-structuralist discourse (Michel Foucault, Roland Barthes) and postmodernist/post-structuralist thought (Jacques Derrida, Julia Kristeva, Luce Irigaray, Hélène Cixous, Pierre Bourdieu). These waves are closely related to important historical events such as the Front Populaire and the Algerian War of independence. The unit explores these major intellectual currents and uncovers the historical and cultural reasons for their development.
