This is an intermediate to advanced unit designed principally for students specialising in health promotion and disease prevention. Students taking this unit spend a major part of their time on secondment to an outside agency involved in health promotion. They are expected to obtain first-hand experience of the practical aspects of health promotion by becoming actively involved in the activities of their host agency in the context of the relevant scientific literature.

This unit is concerned with the design and conduct of surveys for obtaining information about health in the population including health-related behaviour, experiences, attitudes and opinions. Areas covered include conceptualisation of the research problem, survey design and planning, development of data-gathering instruments, field-work procedures and the preparation of data for analysis. Aspects of sampling theory and sample selection are covered, as well as measurement theory, scaling techniques and sources of error in surveys. The unit addresses the particular characteristics of various methods of data collection for health surveys including face-to-face interviews, telephone interviews and self-administered questionnaires. Ethical issues and practice in the conduct of survey research are also discussed. Critical analysis of relevant literature is an important aspect of the unit.

This unit studies classical and modern regression methods for the analysis of proportions (prevalence risks), (incidence) rates and means (of quantitative variables). Topics include ANOVA and multiple linear regression, 2 x K tables, logistic regression, Poisson regression, Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox proportional hazards regression. The application of these methods to the analysis of data from clinical, cross-sectional, case-control and cohort studies is discussed and critical appraisal of published literature is included. Computing using SAS is an integral part of the unit.

This unit introduces the topic of linked health data analysis at an introductory to intermediate level. It fills a gap in research training opportunities by combining the principles of health care epidemiology with hands-on practical exercises in the implementation of computing solutions. The modular structure of the unit provides students with a theoretical grounding in the classroom on each topic, followed by a training session on the corresponding computing solutions. Students use de-identified linked data files on CD-ROM in the hands-on exercises. The computing component of the unit assumes a basic familiarity with computing syntax used in programs such as SPSS, SAS or STATA and methods of basic statistical analysis of fixed-format data files.

This unit builds on the practical skills of rural clinicians as educators. It begins with a discussion forum about the principles of successful teaching based on clinicians' prior experience. Students identify an educational topic of interest in their practice and/or professional development. They are then guided through current educational literature on this topic to develop achievable learning objectives. The students spend time together and with lecturers to develop a short course that could be taught in their practice community. Discussions about how to assess the efficacy of their course enables the selection of appropriate evaluation tools and methods. As practicable, students are invited to implement their course and receive feedback. They are invited to systematically reflect on their practice. Finally, real and dummy data are used to assist students consider how they would prepare a report, conference presentation or publication of their education project.
