This unit examines some of the main issues in natural resource management in Australia and the development of policies to address environmental degradation. It assesses some of the responses by government and how intergovernmental relationships have an impact on policies. It also examines policies for specific sectors such as waterways and water resources, rangelands and agricultural landscapes, terrestrial biodiversity and forests, and marine and coastal environments.

This first-year unit introduces a cross-disciplinary approach and broad overview of contemporary issues in agriculture, the environment and society. In particular the focus is on (1) the importance of agriculture, horticulture, animal science, natural resources, and their futures; and (2) food and fibre systems from global, Australian and Western Australian perspectives; and (3) how science may be applied to resolve real-world problems. In completing this unit, students also gain a range of practical and analytic skills, including scientific report writing and problem-based learning skills.

This unit provides an introduction to the multidisciplinary aspects of marine science. Using the framework of an important marine environment, it outlines how the multidisciplinary aspects of marine science are essential in understanding and managing such an ecosystem. Aspects covered include oceanography, geology and geomorphology and marine biology.

An analysis of the principles of organic agriculture is facilitated using an integrated approach that includes plant, soil, animal, economic, marketing and social issues. Students work in groups and are encouraged to critically analyse research on organic agriculture in horticultural and agricultural farming systems and to synthesise information that is applicable in local, national and international contexts. Industry issues relevant to the establishment and functioning of organic farming systems are considered. This enhances practical and theoretical analysis and problem-solving skills. Supporting lectures cover the principles of organic farming, nutrient and energy flows in organic farming systems, the use of animals and crops, economic and environmental assessment and consumer issues. These issues are considered in relation to principles of sustainable land use from social, economic and scientific perspectives.

An understanding of field methods is fundamental to all areas of marine science. The unit emphasises the integration of principles, techniques and information for the multidisciplinary study of marine environments. Students design and conduct a study to sample the near-shore marine environment using oceanographic, geological, geomorphological and biological techniques.

This is an introductory unit in biological oceanography. The lecture series places biological oceanographic subjects into a global and an Australian context. The lectures follow an offshore to onshore, primary to secondary production, oceanic to neritic, water column to benthos, large- to small-scale order. The unit focuses on primary producers and examines implications for sustainable management. The practical work begins with an introduction to oceanographic research techniques followed by a group research project.

Pastures are examined from an ecological perspective, covering processes at scales ranging from seed-bank dynamics through to pasture composition and livestock productivity. There is an emphasis on how a Mediterranean environment affects plants and livestock, and on how WA systems are rapidly changing in response to a need for improvements in economic returns and environmental outcomes. Key topics include the introduction of new annual pasture legumes, the use of perennial pasture species, saltland pastures, integrated pest management and the benefits of plant diversity. The unit emphasises the role pasture management may play in addressing problems such as dryland salinity, the lack of green feed for livestock over summer, pest and disease outbreaks and a drying climate. This is a key unit for students studying Agriculture, but also very relevant for students studying Animal Science, Genetics and Breeding or Natural Resource Management.

This unit has an overview of world grain production and Australian cropping. The consequences of climate change and the necessary adaptations in future cropping systems are explored. The unit also investigates systems in agriculture using no-till and precision cropping as examples. The use of integrated pest management to meet the challenges of weed and disease resistance is considered. Seeding, spraying and harvest machinery are covered before the agronomy and improvement of crops are discussed, including wheat, barley, lupin, field pea and canola. The potential farming system benefits of crop rotation and phase farming with perennials are explored. The use of crop and weed models as research and management tools are investigated. An overview of genetically modified crops and organic agriculture is given.
