University of Western Australia - Old Worlds, New Empires 1250–1750

In the period 1250–1750 rich and powerful societies in Europe, Asia and Africa increasingly came into contact and conflict. This unit investigates the comparative histories of these societies, exploring themes such as changing views of the world from Islamic and European perspectives, the effects of major demographic events such as the Black Death and other pandemics, religious expansion, the economic bases of different societies, slavery and the beginnings of European exploration, conquest and colonisation, and modern global capitalism.

University of Western Australia - Medieval Europe c.750–1250

This unit covers the emergence, development and transformation of Western Europe (especially England, France, Germany and Italy) from the period just following the breakdown of the Roman Empire to the beginnings of nation-states, and the great crusading movements of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. In this period, Western Europe underwent many startling developments. Institutions that people now take for granted—nations, towns, marriage structures, universities—either developed for the first time, or changed their nature radically during these 500 years. Students explore how these social, political, economic and cultural changes came about, and what they mean for Western society today.

University of Western Australia - Europe 1890–1945

The vaulting ambitions and abysmal horrors of the twentieth century dominate our historical memory. Students explore the origins of these memories in Europe's experience of modernity during its moment of maximum crisis between 1914 and 1945. Beginning with the spectacular burst of creativity during the decades before World War I when figures such as Freud, Nietzsche and Picasso revolutionised how Europeans conceived themselves, this unit moves to the orgy of self-destruction that gripped the continent between 1914 and 1918. It then studies the inter-war years during which so many of Europe's best and brightest enrolled in the terrible crusades led by Stalin and Hitler. Their militant ideologies—the triumph and terror of Communism in Russia, the strutting arrogance of fascism in Italy and Germany—form the focus of the unit. It concludes with the unprecedented inhumanity of World War II, with its indiscriminate terror-bombing of Europe's ancient cities and the genocidal terrorism of the Nazis. The unit seeks the origins and meaning of this ultimate 'crisis of modernity'.

University of Western Australia - Hitler, the Holocaust and the Historians

This unit recounts the history of Nazi Germany. It explores two major discussions among historians: (1) How did National Socialism come into existence? Was it the result of a specific German deviation from the natural course of history or the very essence of modernity?; and (2) How did the horror of the industrialised killing of the Jewish population emerge as one of the central results of Nazi rule over Europe? Was it planned all along by Hitler and his henchmen, or was it the outcome of a cumulative process of radicalisation? Why did so many participate in this genocide? And why was there so little resistance against it?

University of Western Australia - From Imperialism to Globalisation

This unit traces the bumpy road from a world dominated by European colonial empires to a world dominated by global flows of money and information. One of the by-products of Europe's imperial era was a new way of looking at the world which defined Europeans as normal and other people as strange, exotic or inferior. Slavery was abolished but new ways were found to force people to work in mines and on plantations. Inevitably, colonised peoples fought back with movements of socialist revolution and national liberation. After World War II, movements of decolonisation promised self-determination but failed to deliver true independence. The so-called 'Asian Tigers' seemed on the verge of breaking out of the old chains of poverty and dependence in the early 1990s. However, in 1997 and 2001 new world crises erupted which challenged the idea that globalisation might bring a golden age of prosperity.

University of Western Australia - Later Medieval England 1272–1485

This unit covers the political, economic, social and cultural history of England from the reign of Edward I until the reign of Richard III. It explores how England in that period moved from being an identifiable nation, but with inextricable French links to Europe in 1272, to being a distinct and different national state. Themes studied include the development of Parliament, the Black Death, the beginnings of the centuries-long rivalries with Scotland and France in the Hundred Years' War, popular politics in the Wars of the Roses, and Richard III and the mystery of the princes in the Tower.
