. This skills training will focuss on reading several important texts, written by philosophers of the Enlightenment (Candide by Voltaire and Kant's Prolegomena in an English translation). The widely different nature and backgrounds of these texts will be discussed in accompanying lectures.

This course addresses the importance of reflection upon the role of values in Western history. It focuses upon a number of influential views on man and reality, and considers the ways in which such views are bound to clash with the actuality of the human condition. Starting-point for the course is the continuous tension between a rational, philosophic worldview on the one hand, and a more implicit approach to reality on the other hand, as expressed in Greek tragedies, for example, in which the inadequacy of an exclusively rational approach – and indeed any form of one-sidedness – is revealed. The course will not only introduce explicit philosophical theories, but also deals with more implicit images of the good life as expressed in works of literature.
